Guidelines for Recycling in Lincoln as of June, 2002

Massachusetts regulations prohibit the disposal in regular trash of recyclable materials including:

Glass Bottles and Jars
Massachusetts Returnable Bottles
Plastic Bottles and any Plastic Containers with Numbered Triangles
Metal Food and Beverage Containers
Leaves and Yard Waste
Recyclable Paper and Cardboard
Lead-Acid Batteries (Car Batteries)
White Goods (Large Appliances)
Cathode Ray Tubes--CRT's (Computers, Video Games, and TVs)

Please help Lincoln comply with these regulations and protect our environment by recycling.  See below for a list of additional information regarding the Transfer Station and recyclable materials.

Stickers: Please make sure you have a Lincoln Transfer Station sticker on your vehicle.  Stickers may be obtained, free of charge, at the DPW on Lewis Street from 7:30 a. to 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday.   Since the Recycling Center is continually evolving, this information will be updated as things change.

Remember that most food containers that are recyclable (glass, plastic, metal) have to be sorted by hand at some point.  PLEASE be considerate of the handlers and wash or rinse all recyclable containers. An easy way to clean them is to put them in the dishwasher.

Glass: Clean, with or without neck rings removed, all bottles except MA returnable ones.  Please rinse. (Light bulbs and glass containing crystal or lead should go in the trash.)

MA returnable cans and bottles:  Place rinsed cans and bottles in plastic lined boxes marked for them in the new shed. Please place bottles in the blue recycling bins on the floor in the shed so they will not break. If possible, please place glass bottles in their original packaging. Returnable cans and bottles will be donated to You Can Help, Inc. (formerly Cans for Cancer.)

The Transfer Station shed also houses the swap table and collection of videotapes and batteries. Sort batteries into three containers: Alkaline, button batteries, and Ni-Cad.   Lawn mower and car batteries can go under the swap table.

Mixed Paper:  includes junk mail, newspapers, magazines, catalogs, phone books, cereal boxes without plastic or paper liners, paper bags, cardboard boxes.   No wax-covered paper cartons such as orange juice or milk containers.

Plastic Containers:  clean and sorted according to the numbers in the tiny triangles.
Plastic Bags, if clean, may be left in a container to the left of the door at Crosby's Star Market in Concord.

Old eyeglasses: place in box near entrance inside Lincoln Public Library.

Tires:  can go to Joey's Auto Repair for $1, rims and all.   Doherty's is $1 per tire, $2 with rims

Motor Oil:  Public Works Department will accept oil for recycling at 30 Lewis
Street, M-F 7:30-3:30.  Only motor oil, NO MIXTURES, will be accepted. Do not
leave oil outside the building. Joey's charges 40 cents a gallon; Doherty's
charges 50 cents a gallon for disposal.

Used furniture can be picked up by the Salvation Army, Good Will, Pine Street Inn, or Veterans. In Lincoln, items can be donated to the First Parish May Market (White Elephant sale).  Call Tucker Smith 259 9320 to arrange.

Barrels for Styrofoam are now in place at the Transfer Station. Put block Styrofoam, clean meat trays, Styrofoam cups and peanuts, all in the trash containers in front of the Styrofoam bins. (There are plastic bags lining the containers, so that Paul Harvey, our Transfer Station attendant, does not have to bag everything by hand.)

18-gallon plastic containers for recycling are for sale at the Town Clerk's Office and at the DPW on Lewis Street.  Cost is $5 each.

Hazardous Waste:
Periodic hazardous waste days are scheduled.  Contact Elaine Carroll in the office of the Board of Health at 259 2613 to be registered free of charge. If you do not have a registration form, you will have to pay before entering.  The Hazardous Waste site is on Hartwell Avenue in Lexington, on the right on the way to Bedford.

Acceptable hazardous waste materials include:  Aerosol cans, car products (anti-freeze, solvents, degreasers, batteries, brake fluid), cleaning supplies (bathroom, oven, drain), fluorescent lights, herbicides, hobby/artist supplies, lighter fluid, paint and paint strippers, pesticides, photography supplies, pool chemicals, poisons, waste fuels, solvent adhesives, weed killers, and wood preservatives.  Materials which will not be accepted:  ammunition, fireworks, explosives, asbestos, fire extinguishers, gas cylinders, infectious and biological waste, medicines and syringes, PCBs, radioactive materials, smoke detectors, and tires.

Computer disposal:  CRTs (Cathode Ray Tubes) are found in computer monitors, video games, and TVs. The average CRT contains about 5 pounds of lead. CRTs are now banned from landfills and trash burning facilities in Massachusetts.
CRTs will continue to be collected. Put them under the table in the Transfer Station shed.

Lincoln Recycling Committee Chair is Peggy Elliott.  Call her at 259-0433 if you have recycling questions and suggestions.  Other members are Inge Richardson, Diana Smith, Sandy Bradlee, and Lincoln Assistant Town Administrator Christopher Coleman.
